Why I recommend Water flossers!

First I want to mention that I am very biased because I recommend water flossers to many patients. That’s how much I support the use of water flossers!

Here are some reasons why I highly recommend them:

  1. Efficient Plaque Removal: Water flossers use a steady stream of water to dislodge food particles and plaque from between your teeth and along the gumline. This targeted approach helps prevent plaque buildup, reducing the risk of gum disease and cavities.
  2. Gentle on Gums: For individuals with sensitive gums or dental work, such as braces or implants, water flossers offer a gentle yet effective alternative to traditional string floss.
  3. Easy to Use: Let’s be honest, traditional string floss is difficult to use. Add in braces, implants, or some other appliance, and flossing becomes exponentially more difficult. Operating a water flosser is straightforward, making it a user-friendly option for people of all ages. I typically recommend using it on the lowest power setting at first and then once you are more comfortable and feel like you want to turn up the power, you can do so.

I typically try not to recommend anything without having solid evidence. Well, there is plenty of research to support the use of water flossers.

Studies have consistently demonstrated the effectiveness of water flossers in improving oral health:

A study published in the Journal of Clinical Dentistry found that using a water flosser in conjunction with regular brushing was significantly more effective at reducing plaque and gingivitis compared to brushing alone.

Another study in the Journal of Periodontology showed that water flossers were highly effective in reducing bleeding and inflammation of the gums, indicating their role in preventing gum disease.

This does not mean that you should switch from floss to water flossers. If you are maintaining good oral health, I typically do NOT recommend changing your routine.

Drawbacks of Water Flossers

While water flossers offer numerous benefits, it’s important to be aware of their limitations:

  1. Cost: There are some very expensive options on the market and yet there are many that can be found for under $100 and they all do the same thing.
  2. Requires Power Source: I prefer either battery-operated or rechargeable. Just like a toothbrush is not attached to a wall, I do not want my water flosser attached either. These also take up less space than the wired ones. It’s just personal preference.
  3. Learning Curve: Some individuals may need a short period of adjustment to find the right pressure setting and technique for their comfort. It can get messy, you may want to try using it in the shower for the first time.

Tips for Effective Use

To maximize the benefits of your water flosser, consider the following tips:

  1. Use Lukewarm Water: Lukewarm water is ideal for comfortable use. Avoid using extremely hot or cold water. I do NOT recommend using mouthwash.
  2. Start at a Low Pressure Setting: Begin with the lowest pressure setting and gradually increase it until you find a comfortable yet effective level.
  3. Aim at a 90-degree Angle: Hold the tip of the flosser at a 90-degree angle to your teeth and gums for optimal plaque removal.
  4. Be Thorough: Take your time to clean between each tooth and along the gumline, ensuring a comprehensive clean. Just like with string floss, you have to put in some effort.

Conclusion

Incorporating a water flosser into your oral care routine can be a game-changer for your dental health. With the backing of scientific studies, I can say that this tool efficiently removes plaque and promotes healthy gums. While there are some drawbacks, the benefits far outweigh them.
