Dental implants are one of the most reliable ways to replace missing teeth, with a success rate of 95% or more. They’re sturdy, secure, and meant to last for years. But what happens when your rock-solid replacement starts to feel a little wobbly? If your dental implant feels loose, don’t panic. It might not be serious, but it’s also not something to ignore. Here’s what you need to know.
Is it the Implant or the Crown?
Sometimes, what feels like a loose implant is actually just the crown (the artificial tooth on top) coming loose. This is the most visible part of the replacement and takes the majority of the wear in your mouth. If the crown is loose, your dentist can often fix it quickly by tightening or re-cementing it. No surgery required!
This is one of the best-case scenarios and happens far more often than full implant failure. So, you can breathe a sigh of relief if this ends up being the problem.
What Happens if It’s the Implant Fixture?
If the implant post (the metal screw placed into your jaw) is moving, that’s a more serious issue. There are a few reasons why this may occur, ranging from poor bone fusion (osseointegration) to bone loss due to periodontitis or infection. A forceful blow to your mouth due to an accident or altercation is also possible.
In any of these cases, your dentist will likely need to take X-rays to see what’s going on beneath the surface. Many times, treatment is possible, but if the implant can’t be saved, they’ll discuss options for replacement or repair.
What Should You Do Now?
If your dental implant feels loose, the first thing to do is take a breath and assess the situation. Immediately stop touching it with your tongue or fingers and call your dentist to schedule a follow-up appointment.
In the meantime, don’t try to tighten it yourself and avoid chewing on that side of your mouth. Even if it turns out to be something simple, it’s better to play it safe.
A loose dental implant can be concerning, but until you know more, there’s no reason to panic! No matter what happens, your dentist will use all their skills to save your smile so you can protect your investment and keep your confidence.
