Dental implants are the best tooth replacement solution out there! What makes them unique is that they replace the roots of the missing teeth, not just the chewing surfaces. This allows for all sorts of additional benefits, including greater stability, longevity, and comfort. To achieve this, getting dental implants requires a surgical procedure. It’s important that the area is given plenty of time to heal so your dental implants can have a sturdy foundation. Here are some things you should avoid after your surgery to set your implants up for success!

Smoking

Dental implants rely on a process called “osseointegration.” This is when the jawbone and the implant fuse together, essentially making the implant a part of your body. If you are smoking or using other tobacco products, you can slow down the healing process. It’s best to refrain from smoking completely for a week before and several months after your procedure. This is also a great time to give up the bad habit for good.

Rinsing Vigorously

Swishing your mouth with salt water is a great way to promote healing, but you need to be careful not to do so too vigorously. This can disturb the surgical site and cause bleeding. When you clean your teeth, you can gently swish water, salt water, or mouthwash around. Remember not to spit either. Instead, allow the liquid to flow out of your mouth into the sink.

Intense Exercise

Getting plenty of exercise is important to maintain a healthy lifestyle. However, intense physical activity increases blood flow and can increase bleeding at the surgical sites. If you partake in strenuous exercise, it’s best to take a little break after your procedure. If your job is physically demanding, take a few days off to rest.

Hard and Hot Foods

For several days after your surgery, stick to a soft-food diet. You should avoid spicy and hot foods as well. Try to chew on the opposite side of your mouth as your dental implant too. This way, you are less likely to disturb the healing process.

Using Straws

When you use a straw to drink, you create a suction in your mouth and can potentially dislodge the blood clot that has formed over the implant site. This can cause dry socket – a very painful condition that requires attention from a dental professional.

To help your recovery go as smoothly as possible, avoid the things listed above. You will be showing off a complete smile with confidence in no time!
